Arts, Heritage & Cultural Translation

Museum texts, exhibition catalogues, cultural heritage documentation, art history, and institutional cultural content translated for international audiences.

Arezzo sits in the middle of one of the densest concentrations of cultural heritage in the world. Piero della Francesca painted in this city. The Chimera of Arezzo came from this earth. The goldsmithing tradition that runs through this province has produced some of the finest work in Europe for five centuries. This context is not incidental to the work I do here — it is why I am here, and why arts and heritage translation is a central part of my practice.

Museum and cultural institution texts require something different from most translation work. They address an audience that may know nothing about the subject and must leave knowing something real. Exhibition labels must be accurate, engaging, and brief. Audioguide scripts must hold attention while the visitor is looking at something else entirely. Catalogue essays must survive peer review in the target language.

I translate across the full range of cultural institution content: exhibition catalogues and brochures, wall texts and object labels, audioguide and multimedia scripts, institutional websites and promotional materials, heritage site interpretation boards, educational materials for schools and families, and grant applications and project documentation for cultural institutions seeking international funding.

For museums and galleries with ongoing content needs, I can provide style guide development and consistent terminology management across projects. The Tuscan cultural heritage context — Arezzo, Cortona, Sansepolcro, Montepulciano, and the wider region — is particularly well-served by this practice.

In practice

A major Tuscan civic museum required translation of exhibition catalogue essays and 240 object labels from Italian into English for a travelling exhibition of medieval goldsmithing. All materials accepted without revision by the museum’s English-language editorial committee.
A cultural heritage foundation translating grant documentation and project proposals from Italian into English for EU cultural funding applications. 4 successful applications submitted with translated materials.
